GECC Lightning Talks CfP/CfA
Wednesday, July 15, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 2, Cromdale Hall
This panel will feature up to eight short presentations of 5–10 minutes, with or without visual aids. These talks provide an opportunity to present in-progress research and other topics not yet developed into full-length conference papers. Possible topics include:
An argument from your current work (e.g., dissertation or journal article)
Initial findings from side projects or archival research
Pedagogical questions
Field-based or experience-driven observations
The presentations will be followed by a roundtable-style-discussion. Attendees will ask questions that several presenters can respond to, generating productive discussion between presenters and the audience.
All graduate and early career scholars are invited and encouraged to apply (HSS, BSHS, ESHS constituents and beyond).
Edinburgh GECC Sessions
GECC Diversity Roundtable: Race in the Academy: Tuesday, July 14, 9:15 to 10:45am, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 3, Sidlaw Auditorium
This roundtable explores the historical and contemporary processes through which race and racism are embedded in scientific knowledge, institutional practices, and educational structures. It examines how scientific institutions including universities have historically defined who produces scientific knowledge, whose work should be valued, and whose experiences are rendered visible or erased. Participants will discuss how historians of science can study these dynamics critically, reflecting on both the ethical and epistemic stakes of racialized knowledge and how the discipline itself engages with scholars and students of colour.
GECC Listening Session: Tuesday, July 14, 1:00 to 2:00pm, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 3, Sidlaw Auditorium
During the GECC Listening Session, we invite all graduate students and early career scholars to participate in an open conversation about their experiences, concerns, and aspirations within the HSS community. This session offers a space to share ideas, ask questions, and provide feedback that will help GECC shape its programming and advocacy in the year ahead, ensuring our efforts more effectively support and represent our members.
GECC Lightning Talks: Wednesday, July 15, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 2, Cromdale Hall
This lightning talk panel organized by the Graduate & Early Career Caucus provides a venue for graduate students and early career scholars to share focused presentations on work in progress. Presenters are encouraged to explore emerging arguments from ongoing research, initial findings from side projects or archival investigations, pedagogical challenges, or reflections grounded in field experience. The panel aims to foster a collegial and supportive environment for developing ideas, receiving feedback, and building community across career stages.
Women’s Mentorship: The Gendered Job Market: Wednesday, July 15, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 0, Tinto Suite
The goal of this panel is not only to recognize the additional obstacles faced by queer and female scholars entering the professional field, but to provide a mentorship space for scholars at all stages to ask for and provide guidance, share experiences, encourage connections across career levels, and highlight existing examples of community-driven systems of support (and continue creating our own!). All queer and women-identifying attendees are welcome!
Tacit Knowledge: Early Career Publishing: Thursday, July 16, 9:15 to 10:45am, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Floor: Level 2, Lennox 2
This roundtable brings together scholars based in both the US and Europe to discuss early career publishing. Scholars at various career stages will speak on: publishing articles in graduate school, writing first manuscripts and securing book contracts, navigating different publishing environments and regional expectations, building professional development around publishing within graduate student curriculum, and what it means to transition to work in publishing post-grad. We also invite editors, publishers, and scholars organizing volumes to attend and share opportunities and calls for proposals!
